Meet Qaqamba

Qaqamba is in Grade 6 at Mqanduli Village Junior Secondary School, about 60 km away from home. She lives there with her aunt and only comes home on weekends and school holidays. She started school at Ikhaya Labantwana Montessori at the tender age of 3 years old in 2011, when the school was only a Rondavel in Rini village. Her mother is a dedicated member of our Parent Governing Body (PGB) and her father works as a bar man at Coffee Shack Backpackers.

Qaqamba has always been dedicated and willing to learn.  This is how Directress Fundi, of Ikhaya Labantwana, remembers her. Her proud mother is always happy to share how the Montessori foundation has shaped her child. The family decided to send her to school in Mqanduli because they wanted the best education and were worried she would lose this if she attended a local school.

“She is confident and speaks English fluently”

What does the future hold?

Qaqamba would like to do her high school learning in St. Johns College in Mthatha, for which Sustainable Coffee Bay offers a scholarship opportunity. When she grows up she would like to be a doctor and drive a big car!

Her favourite subject at school is Mathematics and this shows in her last exam where she scored 100%! Her final Grade 5 aggregate for 2019 was 77%, which is an awesome achievement. Her parents always bring us copies of her reports for our Monitoring and Evaluation and tracking of alumni, and because they are so proud!

Alumni’s

It is always a great pleasure to see our alumni’s doing well at school. It is especially nice to see parents who are so involved in their children’s education, especially coming from Coffee Bay where parents know so little about the importance of their involvement in their children’s education. We are blessed to live in close community in Coffee Bay where we often interact with past pupils and are kept abreast of their progress.
